When a Building Permit is Necessary

When are Building Permits Required?

Typically a Building Permit is required when you are undertaking any of the following types of projects:

  • Building a deck / porch
  • Building an addition or a separate building on your property (accessory building)
  • If plumbing is involved
  • Building a garage (attached, detached, carport)
  • Alterations to doors or windows – new or structural
  • When dealing with a private sewage system. I.e. putting in a new one, replacing an old one or repairing an existing one
  • Finishing your basement

Talk to your local Town of City Hall prior to the commencement of any major project to ensure that you have all the proper documentation. Checking before you start can save you running into delays over work halted or additional fees for not having the proper paperwork to begin with.
